Blue light can be found all around us. The biggest source? The sun. However, much of the blue light that we are exposed to is “man-made” and comes from digital devices such as laptops, tablets, phones and televisions. Due to the amount of time individuals are spending on these devices, doctors and opticians are becoming more and more concerned about the long-term effects on eye health.
Too much exposure to blue light has been linked to an increase in digital eye strain symptoms such as dry or tired eyes, migraines, blurriness or sensitivity to light. Altogether, these can cause overall discomfort and irritation especially when working in front of back-lit devices.
In addition to digital eye strain, excessive device usage may lead to macular degeneration which is the deterioration of the macula, the area of the retina that controls visual acuity. The health of the macula determines our ability to read, recognize faces, watch TV, recognize faces, use a computer and so much more! Doctors are still studying this – we’ll be sure to keep you posted as more information is released!
To help combat some of these long-term issues, our lenses are coated with an anti-reflective blue light blocking coating to reflect approximately 30-50% of the blue light that is emitted from digital devices. Another added bonus is that we offer a variety of styles of frames that are both beautiful and durable, so we know you’ll find a pair you will love!
